Why doesn't my modem connect at 28.8?

Very few people can get a consistent 28,800(V.34 modem) bps connection.
Speeds of 28,800 bps or faster, require pristine line quality along the entire length of the connection.
However, V.FC and V.34 modems are capable of pushing the limits of analog phone lines,
commonly offering connect speeds of 21600, 24000, and even 26400bps or higher. You can try some of these common solutions:

• remove any electrical devices from the area around the modem line and the modem, eg televisions, coaxial cable, major appliances, etc.
• shorten the modem cord
• disable call waiting by adding a *70, to the dial string
• call US West and get your lines tested for noise. They can sometimes provide you with a filter.
• call the Earthnet office and order a filter¹, or talk to our techs.
• move to a new area.
